Leeds…looking to be the City of Culture in 2023, so what’s all the fuss about?

History, food, architecture, it’s passion for the arts, the diversity that this city has to offer is unbelievable. Whether it’s city life, museums, Victorian engineering or green spaces that tickles your fancy Leeds covers all bases. Indeed, it is even the birthplace to some of our much loved cuddlies Sooty & Sweep and the iconic BBC Children in Need Pudsey Bear. It even boasts being the founding city of the whodunnit board game Cluedo and the first Marks and Spencer – no wonder retail in Leeds has had a head start. The list of qualities this West Yorkshire city has to offer is endless.

Here’s 4 bite-size facts about Leeds…

  • Leeds Children’s Day used to be held annually post-war in Roundhay Park. The children would participate in athletic displays and games. Sadly, it no longer runs, but we can work with what we have got and that’s International Children’s Day on 1st June
  • Barwick in Elmet is home to the largest maypole in the UK. It stands a proud 86 feet tall. Rumour has it that the villagers from Aberford tried to steal it one night but only got as far as Aberford Road.
  • Leeds West Indian Carnival is the largest in Europe founded in 1967, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year – not to be missed for a spectacle of music and colour! (Starts Sunday 20th August 2017)
  • The delicious sweet treat Jelly Tots were born all thanks to the accidental invention by Horsforth lad Brian Boffey. Who knew that he was creating a classic?

Each Ceramics Taster Day includes opportunities to build, adapt and embellish several pots. This one day cookery course is perfect for someone who would like to increase their energy levels, get in shape, improve their health and be inspired to cook nutritious and healthy meals for themselves and their family.
