Last weekend Uniquely Local team member Holly treated her mum to a photo walk around York Minster with our newest experience provider, York Photo Walks!

Find out how they got on and a bit more about the woman behind York Photo Walks…

Holly and her Mum

‘Taking time out our busy lives can often be tricky so getting some quality one to one time with Mum was a real treat!

We met a smiley Paula just outside the West entrance to the Minster with our digital and phone cameras in hand. She went through some basic photography techniques to get us started and gave us a handy ‘how to guide’ to take away. Within minutes of our first tutorial we were taking stunning photo’s of York Minster and getting carried away with our cameras.

As we wondered around the stunning façade of York Minster, Paula was on hand to teach us more tricks of the trade and helped sharpen up our photography eye. Looking at the Minster through the lens of a camera made us feel like we’d never experienced the city before.

Being York born and bred the Minster is quite often just another building you pass on your way to some new shop or cafe. By taking the time to pick out the fascinating details of this amazing building really makes you appreciate what an impressive piece of architecture it is.

The hour absolutely flew by and I wished we’d had more time with Paula so I think we will be booking onto her 3 hour tour next time! We’d recommend this experience for anyone planning a visit to York to get some fantastic photo’s of the city as well as anyone living in York to hone your photography skills.’

After the photo walk Holly sat down with Paula to find out a bit more about the woman behind the business:

Paul Duck - Owner of York Photo Walks

What do you love most about hosting a York Photo Walks?

“I just love seeing people being inspired, it’s just so heart warming to see people come on and they don’t really know much about photography. Usually by the end they have taken some magnificent pictures and they are so excited by the fact they can now do that and that’s what I love about it the most”

What gave you the idea for York Photo Walks?

“I was working in Harrogate and I was approached by a museum there to help them with some creative projects. We came up with the idea of a photo walk to take attendees around the gardens of Harrogate and it grew from there. When I moved to York it was always in the back of my mind as something I’d like to offer. When the pandemic hit it was the kick start to get it out there and help people learn how to be creative and gave them a reason to get outdoors and something a bit different.”

The Bar Walls and Minster One Hour Photo Walk is organised by professional photographer and teacher Paula Duck. Paula loves passing on her knowledge of photography and introducing participants to the wonders of York.

With some many wonderful places and such a rich history there is always a picture to capture. York Photo Walks is about helping to develop photographic skills and knowledge and exploring and uncovering photo opportunities in York. I have been involved in teaching photography to children and adults for many years passing on my knowledge is an enriching experience. I also love just meeting new people and talking techniques and photographic styles,
