Meet the Experience Provider

northumberland cheese company cheese tasting and tour experienceNorthumberland Cheese Company Cheese Lovers Afternoon Tea for Two

Northumberland Cheese Company has been producing award-winning artisan cheese for more than 40 years, with a story that began in the beautiful Rede Valley in 1984.

Founder Mark Robertson started out with a small flock of sheep, using their milk to create Redesdale, a distinctive ewe’s milk cheese that quickly became a local favourite. From there, the range grew to include cow’s and goat’s milk cheeses, earning plenty of awards and building a loyal following along the way.

In 1996, the company moved to its current home in a 19th-century granary on the Blagdon Estate in South Northumberland. Today, the team combines traditional cheesemaking skills with modern production methods to create a varied range of artisan cheeses, all made with pasteurised milk and suitable for vegetarians. Mark may now be retired, but he still makes the occasional appearance for a coffee.

Provenance remains at the heart of the Northumberland Cheese Company ethos. The team can trace the milk used in its cheeses back to the farms it comes from, with goat’s milk sourced from a single herd in Yorkshire and sheep’s milk coming from Lancashire.

Visitors can get a proper taste of the business at its Cheese Shop and Cheese Loft Café, perched above the working dairy. The cheese served in the café is made downstairs, so it doesn’t get much more local than that. From cheesy lunches to the wonderfully indulgent Cheese Lovers Afternoon Tea, there are plenty of reasons to arrive hungry.
