Meet Our Experience Provider – Simon Lacey from Lacey’s Cheese
We thought it might be interesting to learn a little bit about the fabulous people we work with and the stories behind their businesses. In this month’s edition we meet Simon Lacey, the owner of Lacey’s Cheese – an artisan cheese factory in Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales.
Meet – Simon Lacey
Meet the Experience Provider Simon Lacey who runs Lacey’s Cheese up in the spectacularly lovely location of Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales.
Lacey’s make a range of cheese from sweet cheddars to crumbly Wendsleydales, tangy goats cheeses to creamy blues as well as fabulous cheese wedding cakes.
What’s the story behind Lacey’s Cheese?
I wanted to create a product that had its roots in Yorkshire using local milk and selling to Local people, we then over time have expanded the range of cheese we create and now successfully run one of the UKs best cheese making courses.
Who should come on a cheese making experience?
Absolutely anyone should come on a course, if you have any interest in cheese, or how food is produced it is for you, we can cater for all abilities and we can taylor the day to be as technical or as basic as is required with huge dollops of fun throughout the day, Our feedback is a fun rewarding day being part of a small team.
What do you love most about your business?
I love being able to see the whole process of the cheese journey, from making the product to looking after the cheese for sometimes over a year then being able to directly sell to customers, I have met some wonderful people over the years on courses on markets .
You can host choose anyone, alive or dead, and host the ultimate fantasy Lacey’s cheese making course – who’s coming?
For me it would have to be Ricky Gervais, Anthony Bourdain, Rachel Riley, Bill Bryson
Where’s your favourite Yorkshire spot?
There’s a view as you drive into Richmond on your way to Reeth down a road called Maison Dieu and if you look to your left the view over richmond and the Castle is stunning.
Are you Yorkshire born and bred?
No I was born in Germany, but my father being Irish and my mother being Maltese they met in Catterick due to my grandparents coming over after the War from Malta. And because we always had family here we would always gravitate back to yorkshire, I then chose to settle here after school finished.
Know any good Yorkshire jokes?
A city in Yorkshire has gone missing
Police say they have no Leeds
