Looking for a family activity that’s a little bit wild? The Family Animal Handling Experience brings the zoo to you – literally! Perfect for all ages (from curious kids to animal-loving grandparents), this hands-on encounter turns your living room, garden, or local hall into a mini safari packed with fascinating creatures and unforgettable moments.

Led by an experienced animal handler, the one-hour session invites families to meet, hold, and interact with an incredible mix of mammals, reptiles, and minibeasts. Expect soft fur, tickly toes, scaly skin and – best of all – plenty of squeals, smiles and photo-worthy moments. Everyone’s encouraged to get stuck in, learn a few fun facts, and perhaps even face a fear or two!

Each experience caters for up to six people, with the option to add extra guests for just £10 per head – so no one misses out.

Rachael O’Neill and Michala are the friendly faces behind Lion Learners in Yorkshire, bringing their amazing animals to schools, nurseries, parties, care homes and community events. Between them, they cover most of the region – with Rachael focusing on North Yorkshire and Michala looking after West and South Yorkshire.

Rachael has a degree in Conservation and over a decade of experience running wildlife workshops, inspiring curiosity and confidence around all creatures great and small. Michala, meanwhile, joined Lion Learners after 17 years in hospitality, combining her lifelong love of animals with her passion for working with people.

Both share the same mission: to help people of all ages get hands-on with animals and learn what makes them so special. As Michala puts it, “I love taking my animals to meet such a variety of people. This doesn’t feel like a job to me, more of a hobby. When people meet all the animals, I love seeing how their opinions change – they start out loving the cute, fluffy ones, but by the end, they’ve fallen for the reptiles and creepy crawlies too!”

Together, Rachael and Michala make every Lion Learners experience an unforgettable mix of education, discovery and fun — a chance to meet fascinating furry, scaly and wriggly friends up close and learn that even the so-called “creepy” creatures are full of charm.
