For anyone who takes their cheese seriously, this behind-the-scenes experience at Northumberland Cheese Company is a cracking way to discover how some of the region’s best-loved cheeses go from fresh milk to finished product.

Led by one of the company’s expert cheesemakers, guests will step inside the working dairy and follow the full cheese-making journey. They’ll discover how the milk is pasteurised, moulded, brined and matured before the finished cheeses are packaged and ready to enjoy.

After around 45 minutes to an hour exploring the dairy, there’s an all-important cheese tasting session. Because after learning how cheese is made, surely eating some is the natural next step?

The experience finishes upstairs in the Cheese Loft Café with a traditional afternoon tea, including sandwiches, homemade scones, sweet treats and a choice of tea or filter coffee.

A brilliant Northumberland food experience for cheese lovers, curious foodies and anyone who enjoys discovering how local produce is made. It makes a thoughtful experience gift for birthdays, anniversaries or simply treating someone who would choose a cheeseboard over dessert every single time.

Tours are available for groups of up to six people and may be shared with other visitors.

Meet the Experience Provider

Northumberland Cheese Company has been producing award-winning artisan cheese for more than 40 years, with a story that began in the beautiful Rede Valley in 1984.

Founder Mark Robertson started out with a small flock of sheep, using their milk to create Redesdale, a distinctive ewe’s milk cheese that quickly became a local favourite. From there, the range grew to include cow’s and goat’s milk cheeses, earning plenty of awards and building a loyal following along the way.

In 1996, the company moved to its current home in a 19th-century granary on the Blagdon Estate in South Northumberland. Today, the team combines traditional cheesemaking skills with modern production methods to create a varied range of artisan cheeses, all made with pasteurised milk and suitable for vegetarians. Mark may now be retired, but he still makes the occasional appearance for a coffee.

Provenance remains at the heart of the Northumberland Cheese Company ethos. The team can trace the milk used in its cheeses back to the farms it comes from, with goat’s milk sourced from a single herd in Yorkshire and sheep’s milk coming from Lancashire.

Visitors can get a proper taste of the business at its Cheese Shop and Cheese Loft Café, perched above the working dairy. The cheese served in the café is made downstairs, so it doesn’t get much more local than that. From cheesy lunches to the wonderfully indulgent Cheese Lovers Afternoon Tea, there are plenty of reasons to arrive hungry.
