Try Your Hand at the Potter’s Wheel – No Experience Needed!

Ever fancied having a go at the potter’s wheel? This relaxed and hands-on Pottery Taster Session is the perfect introduction for anyone curious about clay – whether you’re seeking a new hobby, a mindful escape from the everyday, or just fancy getting your hands dirty (in a good way).

Hosted by friendly and experienced tutors, the session kicks off with a live demo to show you the ropes of wheel throwing – think centring clay, pulling up walls, and shaping vessels. Then it’s your turn to get behind the wheel and throw your very first pots. Step-by-step guidance means you won’t be left floundering – just gently nudged into discovering your inner ceramicist.

You’ll make up to three unique pieces during the session, and there’s time to decorate them with coloured slips before leaving them behind to be professionally glazed and fired. Two to three weeks later, you’ll be able to collect your fired creations – a tactile and totally personal memento of your first foray into pottery.

Pottery Taster Session in Scarborough

The Scarborough PotteryTaylor Shaw is the creative force behind The Scarborough Pottery – a warm and welcoming ceramics studio perched by the sea in the heart of Scarborough. With a BA in Sculpture and an MA in Ceramics, Taylor brings a thoughtful, hands-on approach to pottery, rooted in a deep appreciation for form, material, and the gentle, meditative rhythm of making by hand.

Before setting up shop back on the Yorkshire coast, Taylor spent several years at the historic Farnham Pottery, where they worked as a tutor technician and production thrower. It was there that Taylor truly mastered the art of wheel throwing and discovered a love for helping others develop their own skills and confidence with clay.

Now back in their hometown, Taylor shares that passion through relaxed, inspiring workshops by the sea – ideal for anyone looking to slow down, get creative, and experience the simple joy of making something from scratch.
