£30.00 PER PERSON

Woodland near Northallerton
Suitable for 1 - 8 people
2.5 hours

A fantastic foraging course from James Hill, the Forager Within, that will help give you the knowledge and confidence to start and fast-track your foraging journey. The perfect gift for nature loving friends and family.

What to expect

You will enjoy a two and a half-hour walk (two to three miles approximately) around some woodland and grassland near Northallerton. James, your guide, will stop regularly to point out the many edible goodies you will find along the way. There will be opportunities to sample wild food during the walk whether that be plants, fruits, nuts or mushrooms.  The wild food available will very much depend on the time of year.

James will also touch on about foraging for non-food uses such as medicinal purposes, making fire or making your own natural string and rope although the main focus of the course will be foraging for wild food.

The two and a half hour course will cover the best ways to start and progress through the early stages of your foraging journey, in order to best maximise your learning and development. Where possible you’ll be tasting some of the things found during the walk and the course will also cover:

  • Finding and discussing over 25 species common across the UK that have food, medicinal and/or bushcraft purposes, such as make-shift plasters or to make string.
  • How to identify the plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms we come across.
  • Foraging laws and principles to ensure you forage safely and responsibly.
  • Information about poisonous species to avoid, and how to forage in a way that will ensure you always stay safe and can forage in a way that is fun and enjoyable.

James is passionate about the positive impact that spending time in nature can have on your mental and physical health. This course will help to connect you to the nature around you and ignite a love of the countryside and natural world.

Introduction to Foraging Experience in Northallerton

James Hill - The Forager WithinThe Introduction to Foraging Experience in Northallerton is offered by The Forager Within, James Hill.

James has been surrounded by nature from a young age. He grew up on a farm in North Yorkshire and has always loved the countryside, wild food, and the natural world at large. His love of foraging started on nature walks with his parents where they would observe the wildlife, soak up the trees, pick field mushrooms for dinner, blackberries to eat on the go and nettles for soup.

In adulthood James became disconnected from the natural world, eventually going down a dark path that led him to lose everything. When he hit rock bottom in 2015  reconnecting to nature and the countryside through walking, hiking, and foraging helped him to re-build and transform his life, mentally and emotionally.

During lockdown James realised  just how positive foraging and everything else he did that connected him to nature had been for him. It was during this time, when he was fuloughed from his job in the travel industry, that he completed his Foraging Diploma.

I believe that re-connecting with the natural world can have amazingly positive effects on your happiness, confidence and physical and mental health.

James’ foraging courses are available in Huddersfield, Sheffield and Northallerton. James also offers a full days Rejuvenature Day which includes foraging and a foraged lunch as well as a nature workshop.
