A fascinating foraging experience near Sheffield
A fantastic foraging course from James Hill, the Forager Within, that will help give you the knowledge and confidence to start and fast-track your foraging journey. The perfect gift for nature loving friends and family.
What to expect
You will enjoy a two and a half-hour walk (two to three miles approximately) around some woodland and grassland near Sheffield. James, your guide, will stop regularly to point out the many edible goodies you will find along the way. There will be opportunities to sample wild food during the walk whether that be plants, fruits, nuts or mushrooms. The wild food available will very much depend on the time of year.
James will also touch on foraging for non-food uses such as medicinal purposes, making fire or making your own natural string and rope although the main focus of the course will be foraging for wild food.
The two and a half hour course will cover the best ways to start and progress through the early stages of your foraging journey, in order to best maximise your learning and development. Where possible you’ll be tasting some of the things found during the walk and the course will also cover:
- Finding and discussing over 25 species common across the UK that have food, medicinal and/or bushcraft purposes, such as make-shift plasters or to make string.
- How to identify the plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms we come across.
- Foraging laws and principles to ensure you forage safely and responsibly.
- Information about poisonous species to avoid, and how to forage in a way that will ensure you always stay safe and can forage in a way that is fun and enjoyable.
James is passionate about the positive impact that spending time in nature can have on your mental and physical health. This course will help to connect you to the nature around you and ignite a love of the countryside and natural world.
