York ‘Whodunnit’ Group Mystery Treasure Hunt Trail

Think outdoor treasure hunt around York and you’re on the right lines for a hen or stag party or group activity with a difference. Your very own ‘whodunnit’ mystery will be out on the streets of York searching for clues in order to identify the culprit and solve the case.

Following a fixed route around York, this self-guided activity takes you past all the top sights in York as you seek out the evidence you need. Your trail is created and personalised by Yorkshire Trails using your hen, stag or group photos, facts and anecdotes that you supply.  These are woven into your activity and can even help you crack the case! Sealed answers are opened at the end to reveal whodunnit!

Suitable for all ages and abilities, this fun challenge is completed in your own time and at your own pace, is best done in teams of 4-6 people and can be done at any time during daylight hours. Allow approx. 2 – 2.5 hours to complete your activity.

Self-run packs include clue booklets, pens, sealed answers, and instructions – everything you need to run your activity.

Choose from:

• Group Pack – includes your personalised trail plus extra photo task. Best for smaller groups of up to 12. This option costs £120
• Challenge Pack – includes your personalised trail plus four extra bespoke tasks for a more competitive challenge. Best for larger groups of up to 25. This option costs £210
• Challenge Extra Pack – includes your personalised trail with the added challenge of using a map to strategise and plan your own route to locate all the clues. Best for groups up for more of a team challenge. This option costs £300

What you get?

You’ll get 5 booklets for you to separate into teams of 4-5 which makes this a great activity for larger groups. Got a competitive bride or groom-to-be? This is the perfect activity to give the weekend a competitive edge. Want to explore somewhere other than York? Trails are available in major locations across Yorkshire.

On booking you’ll be sent a questionnaire to complete in order to provide Yorkshire Trails with information, facts, funny stories and anecdotes about your hen, stag or group, plus any other details that might be relevant. Once Yorkshire Trails receive your questionnaire and photographs, they’ll create your personalised booklet and send you a draft copy for approval.

They will then print and post your packs out to you to arrive approximately one week prior to your planned activity date. You’ll receive 5 x personalised trail booklets (enough for up to 25 people in teams of 5) along with an Organiser’s pack with full instructions and sealed answer, plus 5 pens.

If you’d like more trail booklets, either so that everyone can have one each or you’d like spares to keep as mementos, these can be supplied at £7 per booklet.

Good to know

The fixed route features well-known places in York such as the Shambles, the Minster and Clifford’s Tower, plus some lesser-known areas giving you and your party a unique view of York that you wouldn’t find easily as a non-local.

The fixed route passes many pubs and cafés along the way. The activity is completed self-guided so you can include pub breaks if required or do the trail all in one go. Yorkshire Trails will provide suggested areas to stop if required.

The trail is best done during daylight hours as some clues are set on buildings or features which aren’t easy to see in the dark. The activity is best slotted in before or after lunch – you choose your start time and set your own finish time and location where everyone should meet at the end. Yorkshire Trails can include directions to the start and from the finish as required.

The answers are provided in a sealed envelope so even if you’re the organiser reviewing the booklet beforehand, you can still take part. The trail will be just as exciting for you as for everyone else.
