A unique and immersive experience for whisky enthusiasts. Spend 5 hours working with the distillers at Whittaker’s learning how to make their fantastic single malt whisky. You will experience all aspects of the first (most important!) phase of whisky making, the mash.
What to expect:
- You will be adding the malted and milled grain into the mash tun – ANYONE ATTENDING WILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO LIFT A 25KG SACK OF GRAIN.
- Control all aspects of the “mashing in”, to include temperature, rake speed, settling the bed, etc along with the impacts that each has on the final product
- Pumping out and cooling the wort and filling the fermentation tank
- Activating and pitching the yeast into the wort
- Taking the requisite readings to validate the yield and learning what these all mean and why they are important to the distiller
- Cleaning out the spent grain from the mash tun and preparing for the following mash
*In some cases, you may get the chance to fill a barrel with new make spirit
At the end of the experience you can enjoy a sample of one of the award winning gins or vodka and have a Q&A session with the distillers.
The half day Distilling Experience is held on selected Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year.

Your Half Day Whisky Making Experience at Whittaker’s Distillery near Harrogate will take place at the family home the Whittaker family near Harrogate.
Whittaker’s Distillery was founded by husband and wife Toby and Jane Whittaker in 2015. Their distillery is at their family home Harewell House Farm, Harrogate which is nestled amongst the wild, rugged rolling pastures of Nidderdale and is producing internationally award winning gins and whisky. Their hand made small-batch spirits reflect their passion for excellence.
A unique distillery in an iconic setting, Whittaker’s captures the essence of the surrounding landscape to create spirits inspired by nature. From grain to glass, Whittaker’s care and attention to detail can be seen in every step, creating the finest quality, premium spirits for your ultimate appreciation.

The half day experience will last 5 hours
All of our vouchers are fully flexible and can be redeemed against any of our listed experiences. The recipient may exchange their voucher if they don't like the experience they have been bought. Just see our FAQs for details.
The whisky distilling experience runs on selected Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year.
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the premises including the car park.
The experience costs £90 per person.
